Dogs can bite for a variety of reasons, but it doesn’t mean they are aggressive or mean! No matter what, biting is a reaction, and it can usually be prevented! Here are some helpful ways to recognize when your pup may bite and avoiding that behavior.
Why do they bite?
There are several reasons as to why a dog may bite.
- Protecting their owner or owner’s property
- Protecting a possession – food, water, their puppies, toys, etc.
- Something provoked them – a child pulling their tail, getting a paw stepped on, etc.
- Being scared
- They aren’t feeling well
- Playing rough – sometimes they forget we’re not other dogs!
Know the signs!
Dogs often give warning sings before they bite. Educating yourself on your dogs body language is the best way to prevent any kind of accident.
- Growling
- Snapping
- Showing teeth
- Whites of their eyes appear larger
- Excessive yawning and licking
- Looking scared – cowering, tucking their tails, etc.
- Rigid posture
- Avoiding touch
