If you love dogs or you have one, but your doctor tells you you’re allergic to them – don’t fret! It is possible to live a healthy and happy life with your pets. Here are some potential solutions.

See Your Doctor

If you suspect you may be allergic to dogs or other pets, it is always a good idea to see your doctor or an allergy specialist so that they can properly diagnose you. Your allergy could be something else altogether, such as a pollen or mold allergy. Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication to fight your allergies, or you may be able to take an over-the-counter medication.

Know Your Symptoms

Every allergic reaction is different. Figure out what it is specifically that causes your reaction. This can be the dogs fur getting on you, or being licked by them. Also know what your reaction is, which is mostly commonly hives, irritation, itching, sneezing, or asthma. The specific animal can cause different reactions too – some may not irritate you at all. If your reactions are life-threatening, though, you may want to consider giving up your pet.

“Allergy Free” Zone & Air Purifier

Two of the ways to make your house better for allergy sufferers are to create an “Allergy Free” Zone, preferably in the bedroom of the person with the allergy. Strictly prohibit your dogs access to the room you chose. Use a high-efficiency air cleaner or air purifier to clear the air of any allergens that may have been brought in. Also keep your dog away and off your blankets and clothing. Also be sure to clean your house regularly to ensure less of your allergen.

Bathe Your Dog Weekly

You should know from your doctor if you are specifically allergic to your dogs dander. If you are, be sure to give them a bath once a week to get rid of any of their dander and old skin. Ask your vet or other professional for recommendations on what kind of shampoo to use for your dog.

Different Treatments

Along with the previous tips, you should consider using other treatments to fight your allergy. Allergy shots are common in allergy sufferers, which can be administers by a specialist. Along with this, there is the option of nasal sprays and pills. Using a combination of all of these methods should allow you to continue your life with your fur baby!
