Dogs really do deserve their title of ‘man’s best friend’. They’re loyal, intelligent, devoted and affectionate – and are known to improve our physical and mental health.  When it comes to deciding which dogs make the best pets, it really does depend on your lifestyle and the environment you live in. But the bigger question perhaps is what are Jack Russell Terrier personalities like?  They are big….really big personalities.

Intelligent

One impressive aspect of the Jack Russell breed is their intelligence and this is one trait for which they are renowned. They are often used in Hollywood films and commercials due to their high trainability and in general the breed also thrives on the intellectual stimulation it receives from being trained. It is possible to have a very well trained and well behaved Jack Russell if you are dedicated to providing a stable and structured pack for your dog to live in. Acting as your dogs master will garner you respect as well as a well behaved dog.

Energetic And Agile

No shortage of energy here!  The Jack Russell Terrier is a particularly high energy dog that was bred to have good stamina when it came to the hunt. The Jack Russell Terrier can be deceiving being such a small dog; however, the amount of energy that these small dogs possess can rival even a young big dog on days. The potential owner should always be aware of this stamina and need for exercise because the Jack Russell will always find a way to entertain itself if it is not provided with adequate exercise and stimulation.

Like most intelligent dog breeds that were intended as working dogs, Jack Russell Terrier must be stimulated every single day and offered an appropriate level of exercise to allow the dog an outlet of its energy. Without sufficient exercise the breed is prone to destruction of its master’s property and terrorization of other household pets…this may or may not include children who will generally receive nips at their heels.  This dog needs plenty of exercise and it should be noted that the average lifespan of this small Terrier is approximately fifteen years so bringing a Jack Russell Terrier in to your home is certainly not a decision that should be taken lightly!

Fearless

As far as genetic background goes, Jack Russell Terriers are pretty close to fearless. They will lock their eyes on a target (or goal) and won’t stop until they get to it. While on walks always have your JRT on a leash as he will run right into a dangerous area if he thinks he may have a chance to catch his prey.  As hunters – originally – they would use this same mentality to approach the animal they were hunting. Therefore, Jack Russell Terriers do tend to make great guard dogs in that they won’t whimper in a corner when something goes bump in the night, which will help many who want to feel safe. Additionally, Jack Russell Terriers may get into fights, and they don’t tend to back down from them. Make sure you’re aware of this when start socializing your JRT.

Strong Drive To PLAY

These dogs are players!  Whether you’re just tossing a ball or toy around or going for a walk, this breed of dog is great for those who aren’t just looking for a dog that wants to cuddle all day long. A Jack Russell Terrier will want to love you, of course, but he wants to play and bark and jump around with you, even more!

Make sure you leave enough time for him to have in open spaces.  Actually playing with your dog has benefits.  Make time for you and your dog to play, even if it’s just for half an hour each day. It’ll make a huge difference in attitude and connection between you and your JRT.

They Can Be Noisy

Jrt’s have a lot to say.  Yes, these dogs do tend to be on the noisy side. They love to talk to you and get your attention so that you can share the fun. Remember that dogs bark in order to communicate with you, so take that seriously. However, there are ways to train your dog not to bark at certain times. This is the reason why you need to start training from the very first day.  It will make such a difference for you in the long run.
