Wonderful Wire-Coated JRTs

We all know that Jack Russells come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Those textures include smooth and wiry coats. Rough-coated JRTs have similar colorings and patterns to smooth-coated Jacks, but they have an additional layer of wiry hair that grows on top of the smooth undercoat. This additional layer gives them a rough texture, as well as the appearance of facial hair that can resemble a mustache, beard, and even bushy eyebrows.

The additional wiry hairs makes a wire-coated Jack’s coat weatherproof, which is just what an outdoor working dog needs. It’s pretty cool-looking, too. But it does require a little extra attention so that those long, wiry hairs don’t get matted. This is especially important around your dog’s eyes and bottom. It’s also important to trim the hair between the pads of the feet.

Wire-haired dogs also need regular trimming or stripping — and this is often best left to a professional groomer.

One thing we can all agree on, though, is that wire-coated JRTs are wonderful. Let’s have a look.
